Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil
This is the most significant Hindu temple in the north, dedicated to Lord Murugan. Its towering golden “Gopuram” and vast courtyard are iconic symbols of Jaffna’s spiritual identity. The temple is famous for its strict adherence to tradition and its immaculate cleanliness. There is no entrance fee to visit the temple, though donations are welcomed. Visitors must follow a strict dress code: men must enter the inner sanctum bare-chested (removing shirts), and women should wear clothing that covers their shoulders and knees. It is best to visit during the morning or evening “Pooja” ceremonies to witness the powerful drumming and devotional chants.
Jaffna Fort
Originally built by the Portuguese in 1618 and later expanded by the Dutch, this star-shaped fortress is one of the best-preserved colonial fortifications in the country. Built from coral and limestone, it offers sweeping views of the Jaffna lagoon. For foreign adults, the entrance fee is approximately USD 5 (approx. LKR 1,500). Walking along the ramparts at sunset provides a sophisticated and peaceful perspective of the city’s maritime history. Inside, you can explore the ruins of the Dutch church and the Governor’s residence, which stand as silent witnesses to centuries of change.
Nagadeepa Purana Viharaya (Nainativu Island)
Steeped in ancient legend, Nagadeepa is one of the 16 holiest Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka, believed to have been visited by the Buddha. To reach the island, guests must take a scenic ferry ride from the Kurikadduwan (KKD) jetty. The public ferry costs roughly LKR 100 per person, but for a luxury experience, private boats can be chartered for approximately $50 to $70 (LKR 15,000 – 21,000). While there is no formal entrance fee for the temple or the nearby Nagapooshani Amman Hindu Kovil, a modest donation is customary. The island provides a unique opportunity to see Buddhist and Hindu shrines coexisting in a serene, remote setting.
Jaffna Public Library
Once one of the largest libraries in Asia, this magnificent white building is a symbol of Jaffna’s intellectual heritage and resilience. Its neo-Mughal architecture and manicured gardens make it one of the most beautiful landmarks in the city. Entrance is free of charge, but visitors are usually restricted to certain areas and are only allowed inside between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM to avoid disturbing students. It is a place of quiet reflection where the weight of history is felt in every corridor. Photography inside the library usually requires prior permission from the municipal commissioner.
Casuarina Beach
Located on Karainagar Island, about 20km from the city, Casuarina Beach is famous for its shallow, crystal-clear waters and the unique Casuarina trees that line the shore instead of traditional palms. The water is so shallow that one can walk hundreds of meters into the sea. There is no entrance fee to the beach, though a small parking fee of roughly LKR 200 may apply. It is an uncrowded sanctuary perfect for a private picnic or a quiet swim. For an added touch of local flavor, your clients can enjoy fresh “Palmyrah Toddy” from local vendors while watching the sun dip below the horizon.
Peak Season (January – March):
This is the most comfortable time to visit, as the weather is dry and the temperatures are slightly cooler. It is the perfect window for island hopping and exploring the city on foot.
The Festival Window (August):
This is the time of the grand Nallur Festival, a 25-day celebration of color, music, and faith. While the city is at its most vibrant, it is also very crowded, and luxury accommodations should be secured well in advance.
Off-Season (October – December):
The northeast monsoon brings heavy rainfall to the peninsula. While the landscape becomes lush and green, the ferry services to the islands may be occasionally disrupted due to rough seas and winds.
