Key Places To Visit

Ketchchimalai Grand Mosque

This is one of the most significant historical landmarks in Beruwala, perched on a scenic headland overlooking the harbor. Built on the spot where the first Arab traders landed centuries ago, its brilliant white architecture and striking minarets offer a grand visual against the backdrop of the blue Indian Ocean. While visiting the mosque grounds is completely free, visitors are expected to dress modestly and respect religious protocols. It offers panoramic views of the harbor and is particularly beautiful during the golden hour.

Brief Garden by Bevis Bawa

Located slightly inland, Brief Garden is a masterpiece of landscape architecture and the former home of the renowned artist Bevis Bawa (brother of Geoffrey Bawa). This five-acre garden is a labyrinth of tropical plants, secluded nooks, and eclectic sculptures, offering a tranquil alternative to the beach. The entrance fee for foreign visitors is approximately LKR 2,000 (approx. $7). The tour includes access to the residence, which remains filled with Bawa’s personal art collection, providing an intimate look into the life of a Sri Lankan creative icon.

Barbaryn Island & Beruwala Lighthouse

For a truly exclusive experience, a visit to the Beruwala Lighthouse on Barbaryn Island is essential. This 19th-century lighthouse is situated on a lush 20-acre island just offshore, reachable only by boat. While there is no official entrance fee for the island, a round-trip boat hire from the harbor typically costs between LKR 3,000 – LKR 5,000 (approx. $10 – $16) per boat. Travelers can often request permission to climb the 196 steps of the tower for an unparalleled 360-degree view; a small tip of roughly LKR 1,000 for the lighthouse keeper is usually appreciated.

Kande Viharaya Temple

A short drive from Beruwala brings you to Kande Viharaya, famous for housing one of the tallest seated Buddha statues in the world. The temple is a major center for Buddhist worship, dating back to the 18th century. Access to the temple is free, though donations are encouraged for the upkeep of the sacred grounds. The site includes an ancient Bo tree and beautifully painted inner chambers that depict various Jataka stories, offering a deep sense of peace and spiritual tradition.

Best Season to Visit

Peak Season (November – April):

This is the dry season for the west coast, offering calm seas and plenty of sunshine. It is the best time for boat trips to Barbaryn Island and for enjoying the beach.

Shoulder Season (July – September):

You can experience relatively dry weather during these months, though the ocean may be slightly rougher. It is a great time for travelers seeking a quieter, more private atmosphere.

Note:

The southwest monsoon (May – June and October) often brings heavy rain. While the inland gardens and temples remain accessible, maritime activities like the lighthouse visit may be restricted due to sea conditions.
