Dolphin and Whale Watching Excursions Kalpitiya is world-famous for its massive pods of Spinner Dolphins, often numbering in the hundreds or even thousands. The boat trips typically start early in the morning from the Kudawa area or the Kalpitiya harbor. For a luxury inbound experience, private boats with refreshments and experienced spotters are the preferred choice. The cost for a private boat (seating up to 6 people) generally ranges from $80 to $120 (approx. LKR 24,000 – 36,000). Additionally, the Department of Wildlife Conservation requires a mandatory entry permit for foreigners, which costs approximately $10 (LKR 3,000) per person.
Kalpitiya Dutch Fort
Standing as a testament to the peninsula’s strategic importance in the 17th-century spice trade, the Kalpitiya Dutch Fort is built entirely of local coral and limestone. Today, the fort serves as a base for the Sri Lankan Navy, which adds a unique layer of modern security to the historic site. There is no entrance fee, but visitors must present a valid passport at the gate to gain entry. A Navy officer often acts as a guide, showing you the ancient belfry, the barracks, and the unique yellow-brick chapel. Note that photography is restricted in certain areas of the active naval base, so it is best to ask your guide before clicking.
St. Anne’s National Shrine (Thalawila)
Located on the water’s edge at Thalawila, this is one of the oldest and most revered Christian shrines in Sri Lanka. The church is famous for its peaceful atmosphere and the legendary miracles attributed to it since the 17th century. During the major feast months, the quiet grounds transform into a vibrant pilgrimage site. Entrance to the shrine is free, and it is open to visitors of all faiths. It is a beautiful spot to witness the intersection of Sri Lankan culture and colonial religious history, with the sound of the ocean providing a constant, serene backdrop.
Kalpitiya Lagoon & Kitesurfing Points
The lagoon is the heart of the action for watersports enthusiasts, offering flat water and consistent winds that are perfect for both beginners and pros. While there is no fee to access the lagoon or the beaches, many travelers choose to book lessons or gear through high-end kite schools. A discovery lesson (usually 2 hours) starts at around $60 to $80 (approx. LKR 18,000 – 24,000). For non-surfers, a private lagoon boat tour through the mangrove forests—which often includes a visit to the nearby islands—costs roughly $30 to $50 (LKR 9,000 – 15,000) per boat.
Summer Kite Season (May – October):
This is the peak season for kitesurfing, characterized by strong, reliable winds. While the sea can be a bit rough for boat tours, the lagoon stays flat and perfect for sports.
Winter Dolphin Season (December – March):
The winds ease, and the sea becomes incredibly calm, making it the prime time for dolphin and whale watching. This is also a secondary kitesurfing season with lighter, steadier winds.
Note:
During the “off” months of April and November, the winds are unpredictable, and the sea conditions may limit boat-based activities. However, these months offer the most tranquil experience for those looking to enjoy the secluded resorts in total privacy.
