Key Places To Visit

Main Point & Surf Breaks

Arugam Bay is famous for its long, consistent right-hand point breaks. While “Main Point” is for intermediate to advanced surfers, “Baby Point” is perfect for beginners. There is no entrance fee to the beaches or the surf points. For luxury travelers, private surf lessons with professional instructors cost approximately $30 – $40 per 1.5-hour session (approx. LKR 9,600 – 12,800). High-end surfboard rentals range from $10 to $15 per day, allowing guests to test the latest gear on world-class waves.

Pottuvil Lagoon Safari This is a must-do “silent safari” on a traditional wooden raft, steered by local fishermen. The lagoon is a serene ecosystem of mangroves where you can spot wild elephants, crocodiles, and a vast array of water birds. A private lagoon safari typically costs between $20 and $30 (approx. LKR 6,400 – 9,600) per boat, accommodating up to 4 people. It is a quiet, eco-friendly experience that is best enjoyed at sunrise or sunset for the most dramatic lighting and wildlife activity.

Elephant Rock

Located a few kilometers south of the main bay, Elephant Rock is a secluded beach and a fantastic vantage point for sunset. It is famous for its namesake rock formation and the wild elephants that are frequently seen wandering the nearby scrubland at dusk. Entrance is free of charge. A return tuk-tuk trip from town costs roughly $5 – $10 (LKR 1,500 – 3,000). The short climb to the top of the rock offers a 360-degree view of the ocean and the lagoon, making it one of the most Instagram-worthy spots in the region.

Muhudu Maha Viharaya

Set amidst the sand dunes of Pottuvil, this ancient Buddhist temple dates back over 2,000 years and overlooks the Indian Ocean. It is believed to be the landing site of Princess Vihara Maha Devi. The ruins of the image house and the standing Buddha statues are beautifully preserved. There is no entrance fee, but modest dress is required (shoulders and knees covered). It provides a quiet, spiritual counterpoint to the high-energy surf culture of the main bay.

Whiskey Point & Lighthouse Point

For those looking to escape the crowds of the main town, Whiskey Point offers a more relaxed surf break and a stunning, wide beach perfect for beginner-friendly waves. Nearby Lighthouse Point provides an even more remote experience. There is no entrance fee to these areas. Many boutique resorts in these spots offer private yoga classes and Mediterranean-inspired dining, with yoga sessions typically priced at $10 – $15 (approx. LKR 3,200 – 4,800) per drop-in class.

Best Season to Visit

Peak Surf Season (May – September):

This is when Arugam Bay is at its best. The weather is dry and sunny, and the swells are at their most consistent. This is also the time when the town’s famous nightlife and seasonal restaurants are in full swing.

The “Shoulder” Window (April & October):

The weather is generally pleasant, and the prices for luxury villas are significantly more competitive. While the surf is smaller, it is ideal for clients who prefer a quieter, more exclusive atmosphere.

Note:

The “off-season” (November – March) brings the northeast monsoon. Many seasonal businesses close during this time as heavy rains and rough seas make surfing and lagoon safaris difficult. However, the nearby Kumana National Park remains a beautiful (though wet) spot for dedicated birdwatchers during these months.
